This publication makes a significant contribution to the study of specific patterns of religious thought in early South India as found in the earliest extant literary texts in Tamil, commonly known in Tamil tradition as cankam literature. This work tries to bring out the seminal notions in Tamil religious thought and culture. It demonstrates the significance of classical Tamil texts in the history of religious thought in India in general, and in the development of religious thought in the culture of the Tamils in particular.
